Planning for the upturn - Retail Development

The Forum is looking upon the economic slow down as an opportunity to encourage a more strategic, considered approach to retail development in historic towns and cities. Retail-led regeneration has been an effective tool in some cases in the past, but it can also lead to ill-considered schemes which have a negative impact on town centres and result in the 'clone town' labelling.

With many recent case studies to draw on - Cabot Circus, Princesshay, the Bull Ring, arc, and many more - we are now able to take stock and to identify good practice, in order to be ready for the better times ahead. To explore this and some of the excellent monitoring projects which have been undertaken, a conference will be held in the wonderful City of York later this summer. More details should be available soon.
