According to this book, where I spent my teenage years, was an example of ‘stripped-down neo-Georgian’ – no mention though of the gurgling radiators and splintered floors!

It tells the beautifully illustrated story, not only of the architecture of schools, but also their part in our cultural history. The changes in the “learning environment” are well documented, rendering some buildings no longer ‘fit for purpose’ whilst others “which are inherently flexible in their design and planning .. can and should be refurbished.”

A fascinating study, the book would make a valuable contribution for students of social history as well as architecture.
