This is a brief account of the experience of a small town's success in attracting funding and the delivery of projects on the ground.
For centuries, Buxton has been a spa town popular with visitors from around the world. The town's popularity declined throughout the 20th century, so much so that its local economy became unable to sustain the costs of maintaining its own infrastructure and architectural heritage. Buxton's fortunes have since turned around and it is now being transformed as a result of a heritage-led regeneration programme that is expected to bring a total investment of over £50 million into the town.
By outlining the major projects as well as setting them in Buxton's still fragile local economy, this publication aims to draw some useful lessons and points of practice that may have a more general application for those local authorities elsewhere faced with the seemingly insurmountable decline of a small market town.
